K-12 Curriculum

PA Fibershed’s K-12 Curriculum Program introduces young learners to the origins of their clothing, fostering an appreciation for the materials and processes behind what they wear. It highlights the importance of sustainability, regionality, and the historical significance of textiles in Pennsylvania, particularly in relation to  indigenous and colonial communities. By grounding students in the environmental and cultural impacts of textiles, the curriculum fosters a deeper connection to local resources and ecosystems while encouraging mindful consumption and thoughtful engagement with textiles.

In addition to in-school learning, PA Fibershed supports the creation of out-of-school activities such as clubs, summer camps, and field trips. These hands-on experiences allow students to explore the textile supply chain, participate in fiber arts, and develop a practical understanding of sustainable and circular practices, further enriching their knowledge and connection to their local communities.

This curriculum serves as a catalyst for PA Fibershed’s broader programming, including the Workforce Development and Ambassador programs, by laying a foundation of awareness and interest in sustainability and textiles. Through this multifaceted approach, PA Fibershed aims to inspire the next generation to engage with textiles in a more thoughtful, sustainable, and culturally informed way.
