PA Fibershed is seeking committed members of our Board of Directors to help advance our strategic objectives and support our mission of building a sustainable, equitable, circular and local textile economy.
Our strategic objectives include:
Creating a thriving, interconnected, and equitable local textile economy that regenerates the soil and supports local communities.
Becoming the go-to organization for building a circular supply chain for fiber and textiles in Pennsylvania.
Advocating for policies that support the rebuilding of a sustainable, equitable, and circular domestic fiber and textile industry.
Fostering connections within the local supply chain to promote the adoption of sustainable and circular business practices.
Educating children, students, industry professionals, government officials, and the general public to drive systemic change toward a more sustainable future.

Mission: Pennsylvania Fibershed is a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting, empowering and rebuilding the fiber and textile communities in Pennsylvania. Our mission is to build a more sustainable, equitable and circular future for textiles and the environment through educational programming and industry development.
Vision: We envision a Pennsylvania where the fiber, fashion and textile industries operate in harmony with nature, prioritizing circular economy principles and supporting local communities. Through our efforts, we aim to restore Pennsylvania's once booming textile economy, creating a thriving, interconnected network of individuals and businesses committed to ethical and sustainable fashion practices.

Ideal board members for PA Fibershed would be individuals who:
Bring expertise in the fiber and textile ecosystem: Including agriculture, textile manufacturing, fiber processing, design, or supply chain management, with an understanding of the opportunities and challenges involved in rebuilding a regional fiber and textile economy.
Are passionate about environmental and social sustainability: Advocates for regenerative land stewardship, equitable economic development, and circular systems that support both communities and ecosystems.
Offer professional skills that strengthen the organization: Such as experience in business development, economic development, marketing and communications, public relations, human resources, policy advocacy, education, community engagement, or circular economy practices.
Have strong connections within the local community: Individuals who can help build relationships across industries, connect stakeholders, and expand collaboration within the regional fiber and textile supply chain.
Bring nonprofit leadership or governance experience: Including prior board service, organizational leadership, or strategic advisory roles, and the ability to provide thoughtful oversight and guidance to the Executive Director.
Are committed to advocacy and systems change: Willing to engage with policymakers, industry leaders, and community stakeholders to advance policies and practices that support a sustainable and equitable domestic fiber and textile industry.
Understand local economic development and regional resilience: Experience strengthening place-based economies, supporting small businesses, or developing innovative models for community-centered economic growth.
Additionally, board members will exhibit:
A strong commitment to PA Fibershed's mission and vision.
Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.
Experience in governance, nonprofit leadership, or relevant fields (e.g., agriculture, textiles, business development).
The ability to contribute financially or through fundraising efforts.
Enthusiasm for collaboration and teamwork.
Time commitment to attend quarterly board meetings and participate in committee work (up to 6 hours per month).
These qualities will help us drive systemic change and foster a resilient and thriving local textile economy.

Directors are expected to exercise the duties and responsibilities of their positions with integrity, collegiality, and care, and to dedicate up to six hours per month to Board service. This includes:
Know PAFS mission, policies, programs, and needs
Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in Board and committee meetings; ask the right questions, take responsibility, and follow through on a given assignment.
Support the staff and other directors with timely responses to all forms of communication.
Thoroughly and faithfully read and understand PAFS financial statements and reports
Work collaboratively with fellow Board members, agents, consultants, etc.
Serve as active ambassadors of PAFS by leveraging connections, networks, and resources, including financial resources, and sharing programing, projects and events to fully achieve PAFS mission and strategic priorities
Be open to serving in a leadership capacity as an Officer of the organization
Support Board development, diversity, and optimal functioning by participating in the self-evaluation process, nominating new managers, coaching and supporting new managers (including Board Fellows), and possibly serving as a member of the Board Governance Committee
As needed, participate fully in special projects/initiatives
Attend PA Fibershed led events
Support the financial sustainability of PAFS by meeting the Board’s annual $1,000 give/get commitment and actively participating in fundraising and donor stewardship, including cultivating and maintaining relationships with supporters.
Commit to serving as a director for the full 2 year term.
