Water Stewardship Handbook
A framework for assessing and improving water management across the Commonwealth.
Our state faces significant water challenges, including erratic rainfall, groundwater fluctuations, and reduced aquifer recharge.
Textile production, including farms, mills, and dye houses, relies heavily on this water, making production continuity vulnerable to seasonal variability and declining water quality.
The Water Stewardship Handbook, authored by Sanyukta Singh, provides a practical framework for assessing and improving water stewardship throughout Pennsylvania's textile value chains.
This handbook advocates for a community approach, encouraging stakeholders to view water management through a watershed-scale lens, where local decisions impact the broader regional watershed.

Sanyukta’s interest in both water and the textile industry is combined in this handbook, beautifully supported with local data and illustrated by real experiences.
As of June 2026, she just completed her Environmental Studies Masters at University of Pennsylvania just last month with a focus on Water Stewardship. Building on her undergraduate focus, also on water, and how water conservation is deeply tied to and can help with gender equity in areas like rural India.
We especially love how her handbook examines both the opportunities and challenges that emerge along the way, from growing all the way through to wastewater management. We are incredibly happy to hear how speaking directly to members at PA Fibershed was instrumental to her work with the handbook.
We are incredibly grateful for Sanyukta’s dedication and proud to share this resource with our community. Her leadership highlights the meaningful impact students can have in advancing a more resilient and connected fiber and textile system.
We hope this conversation inspires new connections, questions, and ideas for how we can all contribute to a healthier and more resilient future.
