Description:
When the University of the Arts abruptly closed in June 2024, Philadelphia’s creative community faced profound uncertainty. As Assistant Director of Career Services, this loss was deeply personal. Philadelphia Akimbo emerged from that experience. Constructed entirely from repurposed materials, the work evokes a familiar skyline subtly askew. Presented here at VIA, it occupies a particularly resonant context and speaks to the evolution of creative spaces and communities, and the capacity of artists to imagine possibilities beyond institutional endings.
Bio:
Julie Woodard is a Philadelphia-based artist, educator, and self-described “doula of discarded things.” Working with repurposed materials, she creates impressionistic landscapes, multimedia installations, functional sculptures, and wearable works that explore waste as a site of possibility. For over 20 years, she has worked across Philadelphia’s cultural sector as an educator and curator, teaching in museums, schools, and community spaces, while designing and curating immersive art experiences for cultural and civic institutions.
